The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe heatwave warning for the ACT from Saturday 14 December to Tuesday 17 December 2024.
Residents should prepare now to be ready for the heat. The ACT Ambulance Service advises:
- Drink plenty of water; always have a bottle with you.
- Hot cars kill. Never leave kids, adults or pets in cars.
- Seek out air conditioned buildings, use a fan, take cool showers, and dress in light, loose clothing made from natural fabrics.
- Plan ahead for activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat.
- Look after those most at risk in the heat – people over 65, the young, those with a medical condition, and people who work outside.
Know the symptoms of heat related illness and visit your GP or a Walk-In Centre if you or someone around you is unwell. Heat can make anyone sick.
Heat related illness can show as mild conditions such as a rash to heatstroke, which is life threatening.
